GTA 6 is just 17 days away – and it will reportedly gobble up a monster 210GB of your console

The countdown is officially on. With Grand Theft Auto VI now less than three weeks from release, the conversation among gamers has shifted from “will it be delayed again?” to a far more practical question: will it even fit on my console?

According to figures first posted by a social media account that tracks PlayStation Store data, and later reported by Kotaku and Complex, the standard edition of the game will need roughly 210GB of storage on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar has not officially confirmed the figure, so treat it as a strong steer rather than gospel. But if it is accurate, it makes GTA 6 one of the biggest single downloads most console owners will ever face, and that is before any day-one patch.

The key dates for your diary

Rockstar’s official launch date is Thursday 19 November 2026. The game was originally pencilled in for autumn 2025 before slipping to May 2026 and then to November. When it announced the latest move, Rockstar apologised for the extra wait and said the additional time would let the team finish the game with the level of polish players expect.

Reports say digital pre-loading opens on 12 November, a full week before launch, which gives players with slow broadband time to get the bulk of the download done early. Complex reports the game will unlock at midnight local time, which would mean a midnight start for players in Ireland, though Rockstar’s own launch-time details should be checked closer to the day.

GamesRadar’s guide notes that pre-orders have been open since June on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. There is no PS4 or Xbox One version, and Rockstar has not announced a PC release, so PC players face another wait.

What it will cost you

In the US the standard edition is listed at $79.99, with an Ultimate Edition at $99.99 that adds extra vehicles, weapons and clothing tied to the game’s two leads, Lucia Caminos and Jason Duval. Irish shoppers should check the price on the PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store or with local retailers, as euro pricing varies by seller.

One thing collectors should know: reports indicate the boxed version comes with a download code rather than a disc. That means even buying a physical copy will not spare you the huge download, which is something worth knowing if you live in an area with patchy broadband.

Will 210GB fit on your console?

This is where it gets awkward for some players. Kotaku pointed out that a download of that size would swallow nearly two-thirds of the usable space on an Xbox Series S. A standard PS5 offers more room, but anyone with a few big games already installed will almost certainly need to clear some space.

A few tips before pre-load day:

  • Check your free space now. Both PS5 and Xbox show storage in their settings menus. Aim for comfortably more than 210GB to leave room for patches.
  • Move rather than delete. Older games can be shifted to a USB external drive and moved back later, which is quicker than re-downloading.
  • Think about an expansion drive. If you are constantly juggling space, an M.2 SSD for PS5 or an official expansion card for Xbox is the long-term fix.
  • Plan the download. On a typical home connection a file of this size could take hours. Starting the pre-load on 12 November avoids a midnight scramble.

Why this launch matters so much

GTA 6 is set in Leonida, a fictional take on Florida that includes a return to Vice City, and it is the first new main game in the series since GTA V in 2013. Rockstar’s parent company Take-Two has repeatedly stood by the November date in recent months, and a launch trailer arrived in October.

The road has not been smooth. In a recent interview reported by Bloomberg and relayed by gaming sites, Rockstar’s Aaron Garbut described the 2022 leak of early gameplay footage as “weirdly invasive”. GamesRadar also notes fresh claims of leaks circulating online in October, which remain unverified and should be treated with caution.

What happens next

Pre-loading is expected to begin on 12 November, with the game unlocking on 19 November. Expect Rockstar to confirm final launch times and any day-one patch details in the days before release. If the 210GB figure is confirmed or revised, we will update this article.
