The PS5 jailbreak scene has had its wildest month since the console launched, and the internet has quickly jumped to a bold conclusion: that Sony might rush out the PlayStation 6 to escape the hackers. So is a PS6 early release really on the cards? We checked what Sony has actually said, what the specialist press is reporting, and which claims are pure speculation. The short answer: the hacks are real, but there is no credible report that Sony is bringing the PS6 forward because of them.
Key facts
- A public jailbreak covering PS5 firmware 7.00 to 13.60 spread rapidly in late September and early October 2026, according to Push Square and Tom’s Hardware.
- Sony released PS5 firmware 14.10 on 1 October with security fixes, and modified consoles reportedly cannot reach PSN without it (Notebookcheck).
- Sony paid a researcher known as Jordy a $50,000 bug bounty for a hypervisor flaw, patched in firmware 14.20 on 21 October (IGN via Yahoo, Tom’s Hardware via PlayStationInfo).
- Sony has not announced the PS6. CEO Hiroki Totoki said in May that the launch timing and price had not been decided.
- The newest rumour, from insider Mille A, points to a PS6 reveal in early March 2027. It is unconfirmed.
- No reputable outlet has reported that Sony plans to release the PS6 early because of jailbreaks.
PS5 jailbreak explained: what actually happened in October
For most of its life the PS5 was considered a tough nut to crack. That changed this autumn. Push Square reported on 6 October that the console had been jailbroken “to a massive degree” in a single week, with a hack working on firmware versions from 7.00 all the way up to 13.60, which Sony released in July.
The darker side arrived quickly. Tom’s Hardware reported that an unofficial storefront offering more than 1,600 free PS4 and PS5 games went viral on 12 October and vanished about a day later. A social media post claimed Sony had sent a cease-and-desist letter, although Tom’s Hardware noted there was no concrete source for that, and copies of the project popped up on GitHub within hours. That link to piracy is exactly why publishers and Sony take these hacks so seriously.
PS5 firmware: Sony’s counter-attack, update by update
Sony has not made a public statement on the jailbreaks that we could find, but its firmware updates tell the story. Here is the timeline as reported by the specialist press.
| Date (2026) | What happened | Reported by |
|---|---|---|
| 16 September | PS5 firmware 14.00 released; a popular hypervisor bypass stopped working | Notebookcheck |
| Late September | Public jailbreak for firmware 7.00 to 13.60 spreads | Tom’s Hardware, Push Square |
| 1 October | Firmware 14.10 arrives with unspecified security fixes | Notebookcheck |
| 12-13 October | Pirate game storefront goes viral, then disappears | Tom’s Hardware |
| Mid-October | Modified consoles reportedly locked out of PSN unless on 14.10 | Notebookcheck |
| 20 October | Developer Gezine shows a private demo of access on 14.10; files not released | Notebookcheck |
| 21 October | Firmware 14.20 patches a hypervisor bug Sony paid $50,000 to learn about | IGN, Tom’s Hardware |
The bounty story caused a furious row. IGN reported that a researcher called Jordy reported the hypervisor flaw through Sony’s HackerOne programme, said he found it with the help of generative AI, and received $50,000. Parts of the homebrew community were angry because the bug was seen as the last known hole of its kind. IGN noted the fix lands before Grand Theft Auto VI, which Notebookcheck says is due on 19 November and, according to data miners, will need firmware 14.10 or later.
There is also a scam angle. NordVPN researchers, as reported by Engadget and Tom’s Hardware, found fake “PS5 emulator” downloads on GitHub that appear to install password-stealing malware on Windows PCs. If you see a free download promising PS5 games on your laptop, treat it the way you would a dodgy phone code scam: walk away.
PS6 early release: is Sony really rushing the PlayStation 6?
This is where the hype runs ahead of the facts. The idea that hacks could hurry along the next generation is mostly commentary. Push Square’s Sammy Barker wrote that the jailbreak wave “could speed up the transition” to PS6, but added in the same breath that it was too early to tell. Gizmodo argued the opposite on 21 October: that Sony cannot simply abandon the PS5 for an expensive new machine and that the PS5 ecosystem may be around for a while yet. We found no report from Bloomberg, The Verge, IGN, Eurogamer or Digital Foundry saying Sony has moved the PS6 forward because of piracy.
There are good reasons to be sceptical: the pressure on Sony also seems to point the other way. Totoki told investors in May that memory prices are expected to stay very high into Sony’s 2027 financial year, and a June Embracer Group analysis, reported by VICE, said some analysts thought Sony was considering pushing the PS6 back to 2028 or even 2029. That squeeze on memory chips is being driven by the AI spending boom by Big Tech.
PS6 release date: what Sony, analysts and leakers say
Officially, there is no PS6 release date. Video Games Chronicle reported Totoki’s comments on 8 May that Sony had “not yet decided” when to launch the new console or at what price, and Push Square, citing the Wall Street Journal, said in August that the date still had not been set in stone.
Leakers fill the gap. YouTube channel Moore’s Law Is Dead, a hardware leaker whose claims should be treated with caution, said in March that the PS6 would “almost certainly” arrive in 2027 or early 2028, claiming to have seen documents pointing to production in the second quarter of 2027. Most recently, ComicBook.com reported on 31 October that insider Mille A posted that Sony’s roadmap currently targets a PS6 announcement in early March 2027.
History offers a guide. Sony has launched its last four home consoles in the late autumn or winter, and the gap between generations has been six to seven years.
| Console | First launch | US launch price | Gap to next |
|---|---|---|---|
| PlayStation | Japan Dec 1994; US/Europe Sept 1995 | $299 | About 5 years |
| PlayStation 2 | 2000 | $299 | About 6 years |
| PlayStation 3 | Nov 2006 (Europe Mar 2007) | $499 / $599 | 7 years |
| PlayStation 4 | Nov 2013 | $399 (€399 / £349) | 7 years |
| PlayStation 5 | Nov 2020 | $399 Digital / $499 | ? |
| PlayStation 6 | Not announced | Not announced | – |
A seven-year gap would put the PS6 in late 2027, which is roughly where most of the leaks land.
Should you jailbreak your PS5? The risks
We are not going to tell anyone how to do it, and here is why you should think twice. Jailbreaking breaks Sony’s terms of service, can lead to a console or account being banned or cut off from PlayStation Network, and may void your warranty. Notebookcheck reports that modified consoles on old firmware lose PSN, online play and the PlayStation Store, and digital games may not even load. Downloading copies of games you do not own is piracy, and as the malware reports show, the unofficial download scene is a magnet for criminals. If you care about online security, our report on the new AI tools built for cyber attacks and defence shows how quickly that world is changing.
What happens next
Expect more firmware updates from Sony, especially around the GTA VI launch on 19 November, and more claims from hackers about private exploits that may never be released. Sony’s next quarterly results, typically due in November, are the next chance for executives to say something about PS6 timing. Until Sony speaks, any PS6 date, early or late, is a rumour.
PS6 and PS5 jailbreak FAQ
When is the PS6 release date?
There is no official date. Sony’s CEO said in May 2026 that timing and price were undecided. Leakers point to late 2027 or early 2028, and one insider claims a reveal in early March 2027. Analysts cited by Embracer have suggested it could slip to 2028 or 2029.
Is the PS5 jailbroken?
Yes, on older software. Reports say a public jailbreak works on firmware 7.00 to 13.60. Newer firmware such as 14.10 and 14.20 has closed several holes, and a claimed hack on 14.10 has only been shown privately.
Will Sony release the PS6 early because of the hacks?
There is no credible report saying so. It is commentary and speculation, and rising memory costs suggest Sony is under more pressure to wait than to rush.
Will the PS6 be backwards compatible?
Sony has not confirmed it. Sony and AMD are working together on future hardware through Project Amethyst, and commentators expect that partnership to make PS5 compatibility easier, but this is an expectation, not a promise.
How much will the PS6 cost?
Unknown. For context, Sony’s PlayStation Blog confirmed that from 2 April 2026 the PS5 costs €649.99 in Europe and the PS5 Pro €899.99. Moore’s Law Is Dead claims the PS6 will be significantly cheaper than Microsoft’s next Xbox, which he expects to cost $1,000 or more; that is unverified.
Should I wait for the PS6?
If you want to play GTA VI or other big releases in the next year, the PS5 is the only PlayStation option, and the PS6 is unlikely before late 2027 at the earliest. If you are happy to wait more than a year, holding off is reasonable, but prices for new consoles have been rising, not falling.
