‘No excuse any more’: furious Jaissle lays down law after Newcastle cup flop – and Everton are back in five days

Matthias Jaissle has warned his Newcastle United players that being a young team is no longer an excuse, after a 3-1 League Cup defeat at Everton left the club’s first season under the German in trouble.

And there is no time to dwell on it. The two sides meet again at St James’ Park on Monday night in the Premier League, giving Newcastle an immediate chance at revenge, and Everton a chance to complete a damaging double inside five days.

A familiar story at Everton

Thursday’s tie at the Hill Dickinson Stadium was decided by three goals in a damaging spell either side of half-time. James Garner opened the scoring on 34 minutes after Amar Dedic was dispossessed, Hayden Hackney added a first goal for the club on the stroke of half-time, and Thierno Barry finished off a counter-attack in the second half, according to Sky Sports.

Dan Burn headed a late consolation, but the night ended in scuffles that saw Burn, Joelinton and Everton’s James Tarkowski booked. Everton go on to face Fleetwood Town, the League Two side who knocked out Arsenal, in the quarter-finals.

Jaissle did not hide his anger. He told the BBC that his side lack the clinical edge to win games when it really counts and that they need to learn quickly, describing the result as the story of the season so far. According to Sky Sports, he added that “being a young team is not an excuse any more”.

Jaissle under the spotlight

Jaissle was appointed in the summer after Eddie Howe stepped down, ending one of the most successful managerial spells in the club’s modern history. Following Howe was always going to be difficult, and results are now putting the German under real scrutiny.

Newcastle have lost three of their last four matches, the BBC reported. Their only recent bright spot was a 2-0 league win away to Crystal Palace last Sunday, but they could not build on it.

Read Newcastle reported that Jaissle felt the performance at Everton was not as bad as the scoreline suggested, but that defensive errors and a lack of maturity in key moments were costing his side. He wants his young squad to grow up fast, and Monday gives them an immediate test of whether that message has landed.

Injury worries pile up

Monday’s rematch could come too soon for several players. Striker Will Osula was taken off at half-time at Everton with an ankle problem, and Jaissle said it was too early to know whether he will be available, according to Rotowire. Some local reports suggest he could face a longer absence, so his status should become clearer over the weekend.

Defender Valentino Livramento remains out with a knee injury, Lewis Miley is a doubt with a hamstring problem, and Matias Fernandez-Pardo missed the cup tie through illness. Anthony Elanga’s minutes have been managed because of a hamstring issue, and Joelinton was withdrawn at half-time on Thursday.

Everton have their own talking point. Jack Grealish was left out of the cup tie for a disciplinary breach, reportedly after missing a training session, and it is not yet clear whether he will return on Monday. Jarrad Branthwaite is expected to be back in the centre of defence after concussion protocols.

What happens next

Newcastle host Everton at St James’ Park on Monday 2 November, kick-off 8pm. Only one point separates the sides in the Premier League table, so the stakes are high for both.

Another defeat would heighten the pressure on Jaissle heading into the November international break. A win, though, would allow him to argue that Thursday was a setback rather than a pattern, and give a frustrated Toon Army something to cheer before the break.
