Xabi Alonso has insisted there have been no discussions about sending Estevao Willian out on loan, as the Chelsea head coach tried to calm a growing storm over the Brazilian teenager’s lack of game time ahead of Saturday’s lunchtime clash with Manchester United.
The 19-year-old has barely featured this season. According to Sports Mole, he has played just 31 minutes across four matches, and only once has he been on the pitch for more than 45 minutes. He was an unused substitute as Chelsea lost to Liverpool on penalties in the League Cup on Wednesday, ESPN reported.
Loan talk shut down
Asked at his pre-match press conference on Friday whether a loan was being considered, Alonso said there had been no discussions, according to AFP. Our sources did not identify who first raised the loan idea, so it should be treated as speculation rather than a confirmed transfer story.
Alonso was firm that the youngster still has a future in his plans. “Yeah, sure, he will play,” he said, as reported by Sports Mole, adding that the season is long and there will be moments for everyone. He stressed that the issue was not about Estevao’s attitude but about the context of individual games, and said he expected the winger to be important as the campaign unfolds.
Earlier in the week, Alonso admitted to ESPN that he understood the player could be happier with his situation, a frank acknowledgement that the teenager, who arrived with huge expectations from Palmeiras, wants more minutes.
The head coach also pointed out that the winger is still adapting after an injury-affected first year in England, and said it was only October. It is a reasonable argument, but with Chelsea’s results wobbling, supporters are increasingly asking whether one of the club’s most exciting young talents should be part of the solution.
Defensive blow and a goalkeeper in a mask?
The Estevao debate was not the only headache. Alonso confirmed that defender Maxence Lacroix has a hamstring injury and is not expected to be ready before the November international break, according to Football London.
There was better news on Moises Caicedo, who limped off in the second half at Anfield but has been passed fit. Alonso also said there was a chance that Emi Martinez could return before the break after surgery on a fractured jaw, though he would probably need to wear a protective face mask, with a decision due next week.
Jorrel Hato is unavailable, and Aaron Anselmino needs a few more weeks to get fully fit after a run of injuries. Pep Chavarria is available. Striker Joao Pedro has recently missed matches through injury, while Cole Palmer was suspended for the Liverpool cup tie, according to Sports Mole.
Pressure builds at Stamford Bridge
It has been a bruising week in west London. Before the League Cup exit, Chelsea were beaten 2-0 at home by Tottenham last weekend, a result that ended Spurs’ long wait for a win at Stamford Bridge.
Alonso was candid about the run. He said his players were ready mentally but had only had one day of work physically, and described the season as a journey in which the squad had to learn from tough moments. He also said he saw a better version of his team on Wednesday than on Saturday, even if the result was still disappointing.
What happens next
Chelsea host Manchester United at Stamford Bridge at 12.30pm on Saturday 31 October. Whether Estevao gets minutes will be watched closely by supporters, many of whom have been vocal about wanting to see more of him.
After United, the November international break offers Alonso a chance to regroup and get Lacroix, Martinez and Anselmino closer to fitness. Any genuine move for Estevao could not happen before the January window in any case, and for now the head coach’s message is clear: he is staying, and his chance will come.
