Michael Carrick walks into Stamford Bridge this lunchtime still in charge of Manchester United, still backed in public by his bosses and still searching for the result that might finally steady the ship. Waiting for him is Xabi Alonso, who has offered his opposite number warm words this week but made it clear Chelsea have no intention of doing him any favours.
The Premier League match kicks off at 12.30pm Irish time on Saturday 31 October, and the stakes for the visitors could hardly be higher. According to Sports Mole, United sit 16th with seven points from eight league games, just one point above the relegation zone. Goal reported that they have won only one of those eight matches and are already 15 points adrift of the leaders.
A week of crisis talks at Carrington
The numbers in all competitions are even more alarming. CBS Sports put United on an eight-game winless run, with six goals scored and 15 conceded. That sequence includes a Champions League defeat to Atletico Madrid, a 4-1 humbling at Como and last Sunday’s 3-0 home loss to Bournemouth, which Sky Sports said extended the club’s worst-ever start to a Premier League season.
The trouble has not been confined to the pitch. CBS Sports highlighted public criticism from inside the dressing room: Lisandro Martinez questioned the club’s standards and ambition after the Atletico loss, while captain Bruno Fernandes questioned the team’s tactics after Como and was then left out of the starting side against Bournemouth.
Sky Sports reported that chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox met at Carrington to discuss the way forward, and that Carrick will continue to lead the team. Sky Sports News also reported that Carrick and Fernandes held clear-the-air talks on Tuesday.
At his press conference on Thursday, Carrick sounded calm rather than cornered. He told reporters that there was no decision to be made over the captaincy, that Fernandes is fully committed, and that he does not need assurances about his own future from anyone, according to Sky Sports. He added that he pays no attention to media criticism and cares most about the supporters and the feeling inside the stadium.
Alonso: sympathy, but no gifts
Alonso, who played against Carrick during their careers and chatted with him at a recent legends game, was asked about United’s plight at his own pre-match briefing. “I have great respect, I have big sympathy for Michael as a manager,” he said, as reported by Goal.
The Chelsea head coach was quick to add that the pressure is part of the job at a big club and that managers have to get through difficult spells. He rejected the idea that United’s troubles make them easier to prepare for, describing them as a side with good players and a good manager, and stressed that emotional control and scoring the first goal would be key.
Chelsea have their own reasons to want a response. They lost 2-0 at home to Tottenham last weekend and were then knocked out of the League Cup on penalties by Liverpool. Sports Mole has them fifth, six points better off than United, after a patchy run of form.
Team news: Fernandes back, Sesko and Shaw out
Sports Mole expects Fernandes to return to the United starting line-up after being benched last weekend. Kobbie Mainoo is back in training, but Marcus Rashford’s availability is unclear. Luke Shaw, Manuel Ugarte, Patrick Dorgu and striker Benjamin Sesko are all listed as absent, with the BBC reporting that Sesko is not expected back until at least January because of a shin problem.
Chelsea are without defender Maxence Lacroix, who has a hamstring injury, along with Reece James, Joao Pedro, Jorrel Hato, Aaron Anselmino, Jamie Gittens and goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, according to Sports Mole. Cole Palmer is available again after serving a one-match ban, and Moises Caicedo and Malo Gusto are expected to be fine.
The history that gives United hope
For all the gloom, the record against Chelsea offers United a crumb of comfort. Sports Mole noted that United won both Premier League meetings last season and that Chelsea have won only three of the last 19 meetings between the clubs in all competitions.
The flip side is United’s away form. They are still searching for their first win on the road this season, at the seventh attempt. Breaking that duck at Stamford Bridge would be the most timely result of Carrick’s tenure.
What happens next
The fixture list offers no breathing space. The BBC noted that Sesko will miss United’s upcoming league games against Liverpool and Arsenal, as well as at least three Champions League matches, so the striker shortage will follow Carrick deep into the autumn.
The club have, for now, chosen continuity, and Carrick has insisted he is not surprised to still be in post. But a ninth league game without a performance would only intensify the scrutiny on the decision-makers at Carrington. A positive result in London, on the other hand, would give the manager and his captain the platform to show that this week’s talks have actually changed something.
Connemara Journal will update readers once the result is in.
