‘The group chat just erupted’: Cork syndicate scoops €5.6m Lotto jackpot from a ticket bought while browsing for a book, and they’re off on a Med cruise

A group of friends in Cork are €5.6 million richer, and it all started with a hunt for a new book. The syndicate has claimed the €5,664,896 Lotto jackpot from the draw on Wednesday 7 October, ending a three-week wait to find out who held the winning ticket.

The ticket was a Quick Pick bought at the Eason store in Mahon Point Shopping Centre on the eve of the draw, Tuesday 6 October. According to the Irish Examiner, the head of the syndicate had been browsing for a book in the shop and added the Lotto ticket almost as an afterthought.

The winning numbers were 3, 17, 26, 29, 37 and 42, with the bonus number 38, according to The Irish Times.

‘It slowly started to sink in’

Like so many winners, the syndicate did not realise straight away what they had. Members checked the numbers one by one, and as more of them lined up, the penny dropped. The syndicate leader then sent word to the rest of the group.

“I sent a message into the group chat, and it just erupted,” the syndicate head told the Irish Examiner. The Irish Times reported that phones would not stop buzzing as the news spread and everyone struggled to believe it.

The group has not been named, and neither paper said how many people are in it, so the share each member walks away with is not known. What we do know is how some of them plan to celebrate: a Mediterranean cruise is on the cards, along with plenty of time with family and friends, according to the Examiner.

When the win was first announced in early October, the manager of the Eason store, Eimear O’Donovan, described the news that one of their customers had scooped the jackpot as “just incredible”.

First jackpot under the new Lotto rules

The win has extra significance for players. It is the first Lotto jackpot since the National Lottery changed the game in September, cutting the number of balls in the main draw from 47 to 45, The Irish Times reported.

What does that mean for you? Fewer balls means a better chance of matching all six numbers. Simple maths shows that picking six numbers correctly from 45 is roughly a one-in-8.1-million shot, compared with about one in 10.7 million when there were 47 balls. That is still a very long shot, so it is worth playing only for fun and with money you can afford to lose.

It has also been a lucky year for Leeside. The Irish Times noted that another Cork syndicate won €3.6 million in September, while a Dublin player took home €8.7 million in May.

Playing in a syndicate? Get it in writing

Syndicate wins are among the happiest Lotto stories, but they work best when everyone is clear on the rules from the start. It is sensible for groups to keep a simple written record of who is in, who has paid for each draw, and who holds the ticket, so there are no awkward conversations if the numbers come up. The person holding the ticket should sign the back of it as soon as possible, and keep it somewhere safe.

And if you bought a ticket and never checked it, now is the moment: winners are routinely urged to check old tickets, because unclaimed prizes do expire.

What happens next

With the prize claimed, the syndicate can now share out the money and start planning that cruise. For everyone else, the jackpot resets and the hunt for the next Lotto millionaire begins with the next draw. The National Lottery publishes results online after every draw, and players can also check tickets in any retailer.
