Kate Wyler is back! Netflix renews The Diplomat for season 5 after explosive finale

Kate Wyler has not been called home just yet. Netflix has renewed The Diplomat, its political thriller starring Keri Russell, for a fifth season, only two weeks after season 4 landed on the service. The decision was reported on Thursday 29 October by TVLine and confirmed in reports by What’s on Netflix and other entertainment outlets.

Spoiler warning: this article discusses the ending of season 4.

Why Netflix said yes

The renewal follows a strong start for season 4, which arrived on 15 October. According to What’s on Netflix, it opened at No 5 on Netflix’s English-language TV chart with 4.8 million views, matching season 3’s debut, and climbed to No 3 on the global Top 10 in its second week, appearing in the Top 10 in 63 countries. The site said season 4 had reached 10.3 million views by the end of that second week.

Across its four seasons, the show has spent 13 weeks in Netflix’s Top 10 and racked up more than 130 million views since it debuted in April 2023, What’s on Netflix reported. TVLine noted that the series has earned ten Emmy nominations, including two for best drama series, and that Allison Janney won the Emmy for best supporting actress in a drama earlier this year for her role as President Grace Penn.

Netflix has rarely kept fans waiting on this show. What’s on Netflix pointed out that season 3 was confirmed weeks before season 2 even premiered in October 2024, while season 4 was given the green light at Netflix’s Upfront presentation for advertisers in May 2025. Russell is also an executive producer on the series, alongside Janice Williams, Alex Graves, Peter Noah and Eli Attie, who all served as executive producers on season 4.

Where season 4 left things

Season 4 raised the stakes considerably. As TVLine summarised it, President Penn survives an assassination attempt and then pushes the United States to the brink of war with Russia, over the objections of Russell’s character, Kate Wyler. In the finale, Kate publicly resigns as US ambassador to the UK during a G7 summit in protest, and her husband Hal, played by Rufus Sewell and now the US vice-president, walks out with her.

That leaves the Wylers outside government for the first time in the series, which raises plenty of questions about where creator Debora Cahn takes the story next. Before season 4 launched, Cahn was coy about the show’s future; asked about a fifth run, she told What’s on Netflix: “You can ask, but I can’t answer.”

Who is coming back?

Netflix has not yet confirmed the season 5 cast. What’s on Netflix said that, so far, only Cahn’s return as creator and showrunner has been confirmed, though it expects Russell, Sewell, Janney and Bradley Whitford, who plays Grace’s husband Todd, to return along with regulars including Ato Essandoh, Ali Ahn and Nana Mensah.

One open question is Jodie Whittaker, the former Doctor Who star who joined in season 4 as the new British prime minister. It is not yet known whether she will be part of the next chapter.

When will season 5 be released?

No release date, episode count or production schedule has been announced. Season 4 was filmed in London in the first half of 2026, and What’s on Netflix said filming on season 5 was unlikely to begin before 2027, suggesting a release in late 2027 or 2028. That would break the show’s recent pattern of autumn releases: season 2 arrived on 31 October 2024, season 3 on 16 October 2025 and season 4 on 15 October 2026.

What happens next

Expect Netflix to confirm casting and a filming start in the coming months. In the meantime, all four seasons of The Diplomat are available to stream on Netflix in Ireland and around the world. Netflix’s weekly Top 10 updates will show whether season 4 can hold its place in the chart in the weeks ahead.
