Manchester United’s search for reinforcements has produced a familiar pattern this week: a big name, a flurry of headlines and, within 24 hours, a firm reality check. Reports that the club had sounded out Barcelona about Fermin Lopez have been met with a blunt response from one of Europe’s best-connected transfer reporters, who says the Spain international is going nowhere.
At the same time, a genuine problem at the other end of the pitch is pushing United towards the January market, with their only orthodox centre-forward ruled out for months.
The Fermin enquiry: what was actually reported
The story began on Friday 30 October, when Spanish journalist Matteo Moretto said on Radio MARCA that United had made enquiries about Fermin Lopez and Atletico Madrid midfielder Pablo Barrios. Crucially, Moretto described it as an enquiry stage only, according to reports carried by Barca Universal and SPORTbible. That is a long way from a bid, let alone a deal.
Fermin, 23, is tied to Barcelona until 2031 after renewing his contract in January this year. Barca Universal pointed out that the €110 million figure attached to him in some headlines is a Transfermarkt valuation rather than an asking price, while SPORTbible said Barcelona would reportedly want around £84 million. Neither figure has been confirmed by either club.
Barcelona have form for holding on to the midfielder. Barca Universal noted that the Catalan club blocked a possible move to Chelsea in 2025.
Romano: ‘absolutely untouchable’
By Saturday, Fabrizio Romano had poured cold water on the idea. According to SPORTbible, Romano said Fermin is “absolutely untouchable” for Barcelona and that there is no planned move to the Premier League. He added that the club and people close to the player were playing the stories down, that Fermin is very happy in Catalonia and that he does not want to join United at this time. Sporting director Deco is also said to regard him as central to Barcelona’s present and future.
No United source has commented on the reports, and the Barrios part of Moretto’s story has not been addressed in the coverage we reviewed. For now, readers should treat both names as reported interest at the earliest stage, and Fermin in particular as a rumour that looks to have been shut down.
The real headache: no number nine
If the midfield links look speculative, United’s need for a striker is concrete. The BBC’s Simon Stone and Elizabeth Botcherby reported on Wednesday that Benjamin Sesko is expected to be out until at least January with a shin problem. Sources told the BBC it is an impact injury rather than shin splints.
The issue is not new. The Slovenian missed all of pre-season with the complaint, and it flared up against Liverpool in May, ruling him out of the final three Premier League games of last season. The BBC said he will now miss United’s league meetings with Liverpool and Arsenal and at least three Champions League fixtures, leaving head coach Michael Carrick without an orthodox number nine.
Romano, speaking on his YouTube channel as reported by FootballTransfers, said United will only bring Sesko back once he is fully fit, to avoid a repeat of the problem. He also said the club are looking for a traditional centre-forward in January, partly because Joshua Zirkzee could leave. Romano did not name any specific target in that report, and United have made no public statement on their January plans.
Why it matters for Carrick
The timing could hardly be worse. United are 16th in the Premier League, according to Sports Mole, and have scored only six goals during an eight-game winless run in all competitions, CBS Sports reported. A side that is struggling to create chances now faces months without its first-choice striker.
That makes the January window potentially decisive for Carrick. A new forward would be the obvious priority, but any midfield move of the scale suggested by the Fermin reports would require far more than an enquiry, particularly for a player whose club has made him one of the faces of its future.
What happens next
The January window opens in just over two months. Expect the striker links to multiply between now and then; the test is whether they come from journalists with a track record, and whether they progress from “interest” to talks. On the evidence available this weekend, the Fermin story is a non-starter, the Barrios mention is unconfirmed, and the search for a number nine is the one United storyline almost certain to run and run.
In the meantime, Carrick must find goals from somewhere, starting with Saturday’s lunchtime trip to Chelsea.
