WEST HAM SACKING: NUNO AXED: West Ham sack Espirito Santo after back-to-back home defeats leave Hammers off the pace in Championship

West Ham have sacked head coach Nuno Espirito Santo after successive home defeats left the relegated Hammers eighth in the Championship, the club confirmed on Tuesday morning, 3 November. The decision that saw West Ham sack Nuno also ends the spells of assistant head coach Rui Pedro Silva and goalkeeping coach Rui Barbosa, who leave with immediate effect.

Final straw at the London Stadium

Pressure had been mounting since a 3-2 home loss to Southampton on 24 October brought a nine-game unbeaten league run to an end. A week later West Bromwich Albion won 3-1 in east London, with Jarrod Bowen scoring West Ham’s only goal, and supporters were heard taunting the manager with chants about the sack.

Charlton had also won at the London Stadium earlier in the campaign, and points were dropped against Burnley on the opening day. In a brief statement, paraphrased in reports, the board said a review of the start to the season had convinced it that a change was needed to keep the club’s objectives on track.

West Ham sack Nuno with promotion still in reach

The timing is notable because the Hammers are far from out of the race. After 13 matches they have six wins, four draws and three defeats for 22 points, four points off the automatic promotion places and six behind leaders Middlesbrough, according to The Sports Encounter.

There were bright moments, too. Nuno’s side put six past both Wrexham and Lincoln City and strung together an eight-game unbeaten spell in the league before the wheels came off.

Speaking after the West Brom defeat, the 52-year-old Portuguese coach acknowledged the scrutiny he was under, saying: “Every day there is pressure.” He argued that the only answer was for his team to play better.

A turbulent 14 months

Nuno arrived in September 2025 on a three-year contract to succeed Graham Potter, but he could not keep West Ham in the Premier League last season. The club kept faith with him for the second tier, only to change course 13 games in.

Across 53 matches in charge he won 19, drew 15 and lost 19, as reported by Futbol Chronicle via Yahoo Sports.

Noble steps in as Parker linked

Club legend Mark Noble, together with Steve Potts and Gerard Prenderville, takes temporary charge for Wednesday night’s trip to Cardiff City.

The search for a permanent successor is under way. Former Hammers midfielder Scott Parker is understood to be the preferred candidate, according to a report in The Guardian, with Noble expected to join his backroom team if the appointment goes ahead. West Ham have not confirmed any appointment.

Whoever comes in will inherit a squad that has shown it can score goals, with 33 in 13 league games, but one that has wobbled badly at home in recent weeks. The choice by West Ham to sack Nuno now gives the new man more than two-thirds of the season to mount a promotion push.
