ELDER SCROLLS VI: SKYRIM SEQUEL FINALLY NAMED: Bethesda reveals Elder Scrolls 6 is called Sentinel, but gamers still have no release date

Gamers waiting for the follow-up to Skyrim finally have a name to cling on to. Bethesda has revealed that Elder Scrolls 6 will be called The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel, unveiling the title in a short teaser on Tuesday, 3 November, as part of a video marking the 40th anniversary of Bethesda Game Studios.

ELDER SCROLLS VI: SKYRIM SEQUEL FINALLY NAMED: Bethesda reveals Elder Scrolls 6 is called Sentinel, but gamers still have no release date

It is the first new teaser for the fantasy role-playing game since it was originally announced at E3 in 2018, more than eight years ago.

What the Elder Scrolls 6 teaser shows

Fans hoping for gameplay footage will be disappointed. The brief clip shows a camera gliding over drifting sand before an ancient-looking scroll appears half-buried in the dunes. The Sentinel logo then fills the screen.

According to TechRadar, the video’s description includes a short piece of in-game lore credited to a Moth Priest serving the High Queen of Hammerfell.

Creative director Todd Howard introduced the reveal himself, explaining that fans constantly ask him about the next Elder Scrolls game and that the anniversary felt like the right moment to share its name. “Everybody’s always asking about Elder Scrolls 6,” he said in the video.

Hammerfell setting hinted

The name is no surprise to dedicated fans, who had long speculated that Sentinel would be the title. In the series’ lore, Sentinel is a major city in Hammerfell, the desert homeland of the Redguard people.

The sandy imagery strongly hints that the game will be set in that region, and TechRadar reports that a follow-up post from Bethesda on X appeared to confirm the location. Kotaku noted that the scroll in the teaser could also suggest the story will dig into the ancient origins of the Elder Scrolls themselves, though this has not been officially confirmed.

Still no release date

What Bethesda did not reveal is when gamers will actually get their hands on it. There is no release date or even a release window, and no platforms were named in the announcement.

Bethesda indicated that it will be a while before it shares anything further, and that work on the game is continuing.

Howard has previously admitted he regrets announcing the game so far ahead of its launch. Back in June, he suggested it could still be years away and said it was too early for a full re-reveal, according to Kotaku.

A long wait for Skyrim fans

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim launched in 2011 and has been re-released on almost every major gaming platform since, becoming one of the best-selling games of all time and a long-running joke among players for how many times it has been reissued.

That means many fans have now waited well over a decade for a true sequel. While the Sentinel reveal is a small step, it is the clearest sign yet that Elder Scrolls 6 is taking shape, even if the journey to Hammerfell is likely to take a while longer.
