Nicolas Cage says he is “currently a little bit homeless” after a giant sinkhole opened up beside his $10.5 million beachfront home in Malibu.

Asked about his Halloween plans at a Los Angeles Comic Con panel on Saturday, the 62-year-old star of Leaving Las Vegas and Pig told the crowd: “Something happened to my house in Malibu, so I’m just sort of living in hotels.”

The crater

The sinkhole opened in September on Sea Level Drive, where the ocean had washed away the ground beneath the road. It grew to around 25 feet deep, swallowing Cage’s driveway, cracking the slab outside his garage and snapping a gas line and a water line. The collapse ran all the way down to the beach below.

The City of Malibu declared a local emergency, red-tagged seven homes as unsafe and ordered another 24 evacuated because residents could no longer safely drive in or out. The Red Cross opened a shelter at Malibu High School.

Fighting to save it

Cage bought the four-storey oceanfront house in 2024 and is not giving up on it. Within days of the collapse he filed three permit applications, winning emergency approval to stack sandbags along the beach and around the house to blunt the waves. Further permits cover clearing the broken asphalt, drilling soil samples and shoring up what’s left.

It’s not the first time the actor’s property portfolio has made headlines. At the height of his money troubles in 2009 he lost a Bavarian castle and a string of homes, though he has always maintained he never went bankrupt.
