West Coast Utd’s highly successful Football Academy – which started with eight kids and now has 80 in regular attendance – is branching out to feature a ‘Girls Only’ section. Having noticed an increased interest in girls football at the Academy we believe our new initiative will help grow the game even faster in northwest Connemara.

The girls section will remain part of the main Academy for the moment but we will look at different venues if they become available. We are delighted to have six FAI qualified female coaches on board so we know we can offer a top class programme to any children who are interested.

There is no need to register in advance – just arrive at Letterfrack sports pitches at 10am on Sunday mornings and the coaches will do the rest. The Academy is open to all children aged from six to 12.

For more information please contact Joachim on 086-4098814 or Jessica on 086-4062604. Remember this is all new, so complete beginners are always welcome.

Referees urgently required: West Coast Utd urgently need people to train as referees. All applicants will be given full training and coaching through the FAI and will start with refereeing underage games as a Grade 4 referee.

As they become more competent, candidates can progress as far as Grade 1 if they so wish.

Thankfully the days of referees being subjected to constant verbal abuse are gone and incidents are rare now. Referees are paid a flat rate in the Galway Football League, usually €35 for underage games and €50 for adult games. There may be a few out there willing to come on board or referees from other codes who would like to referee soccer games in the winter. All interest welcomed – contact Joachim on 086 4098814.
