The official launch of the West Coast Utd Football Academy took place at the sports pitches in Letterfrack on January 30.
Despite the cold winter weather it was a hugely successful day and the kids had a brilliant time.
The Academy is now in its third year and attracts young players from all over north-west Connemara – from Leenane to Roundstone, Renvyle to Recess, Clifden to Cleggan and every village in between. There are now almost 100 kids registered between the ages of 5 to 12.
For the kids, of course, the main attraction at the launch was the appearance of Galway Utd stars Conor Winn and Padraic Cunningham, who both spent loads of time with each group, showed some silky skills and posed for photos.
The guest speaker was Martin O’Hanlon, General Secretary of the SFAI. In his speech he praised West Coast Utd for their dedication to community and club football and remarked how the club is thriving and going from strength to strength. The Galway FA were represented by Treasurer PJ Walsh and retired Chairman Joe Keating.
Following a few hours of football the refreshments in the Ellis Hall were very welcome and as always our army of parents, helpers and coaches made certain the huge crowd that had assembled were all well fed. There are too many individuals to thank but West Coast Utd are grateful once again for the ongoing help from the local community and businesses.
West Coast Utd also launched its plan to host the FAI Soccer Sisters camp this Easter. This programme is for girls only and is intended as an introduction to football for all 6 to 12 year olds. Our camp will run on March 19 and 20 for four hours each day. The cost is €20 – for further details call Joachim on 086-4098814.
