The West Coast Utd Annual Primary Schools Cup took place last month, with keenly-contested boys’ and girls’ championships.
While all the games are competitive we try to keep the focus at this age on playing and skill development rather than winning and losing (easier said than done). The players are really fantastic and play with such enthusiasm that all referees and coordinators are kept busy. We much acknowledge all the work the teachers and helpers do in preparing for finals day – all the teams are a credit to their schools and families.
For 2018 the school competed for cup, shield and plate in four divisions, so everyone had a chance to play at their own level. Clifden took the boys’ premier cup, while the Letterfrack girls won their premier cup.
The competition is coordinated by former West Coast Utd legend Paul Gannon, and his ongoing contribution to soccer in West Connemara is very much appreciated. All the players taking part in this annual blitz are welcome and invited to join local club West Coast Utd, who now have a great tradition in promoting underage football in the area. The clubs summer camp takes place over August Bank Holiday weekend and we hope to see all the players taking part.
The Primary Schools Cup is a three-way partnership involving West Coast Utd FC, Intersports Gannons, and the INTO (Clifden branch). The FAI were represented on the day by Johnny Morris Burke (County Galway development officer) and Nigel Keady (city development officer and Galway Utd U19 manager). The FAI involvement is vital to the development and promotion of football in West Connemara.
Summer Soccer Camp
This year’s West Coast Utd summer camp takes place over the August Bank Holiday weekend. Starting on Friday (2pm to 5pm) and on Saturday, Sunday and Monday, (12 to 3pm), the camp is suitable for boys and girls aged 6 to 14, and we cater for complete beginners as well as the more advanced players. Camp places cost €50, with family discounts, and each player receives a football on the Monday. As it’s a Holiday weekend, visitors are always welcome to join in for full camp, or just a day, and we’ll have a daily rate..
For this year were delighted to have a special goalkeeper section with Galway coach Adrian Cronin, and we’ll also have Galway Utd Academy Coaches for a day. We will take bookings on the day but would appreciate as many people as possible registering in advance to speed things up on the Friday. We expect in excess of 100 participants, and groups will be formed by age and ability. For any queries contact Joachim at 086-4098814 or leave a message on the West coast Utd Facebook page.
All West Coast Utd squads will resume training in the first week of August and games commence on August 26 (adults) and over the first weekend in September for juveniles. It promises to be another exciting campaign for all the various teams, and we look forward to announcing some new ventures in the near future.
