A firm favourite in the cycle race calendar, this year’s Bogman 2 Day Cycle takes place on August 27 and 28. Now in its seventh year, the weekend provides for two days of challenging racing in north west Connemara with cyclists from all over the country competing.
Last year, Mark Reilly from Lucan Cycling Road club emerged as the overall winner, while Caimin Muldoon of NRPT took the polkadot jersey.
This event is organised by two local organisations, cultural group CEECC and the nationally-regarded Western Lakes Cycling Club.
The weekend includes a 90km stage on Saturday 27 and a time trial and 85km stage on the Sunday.
CEECC director Leo Hallissey said that the unique location has played an important part in building the event’s popularity, with routes winding through the scenery of Renvyle, Inagh Valley, Maam Valley, and Kylemore.
‘Connemara has proven to be a great location,’ says Leo. ‘Western Lakes’ John James Flaherty has laid out a challenging course through some of the finest scenery in the country, and the great welcome the cyclists receive make this a special event.’
The winner of the Conamara Bog Week 2 Day Cycle Race will be presented with the Gogarty Cup, sponsored by Renvyle House Hotel. The overall winning team will receive vouchers for a day of adventure at Killary Adventure Centre, courtesy of Mary and Jamie Young.
The event is also sponsored by Eamonn Marrey of Marrey Bikes Ballinrobe, Connemara Fisheries, The Lodge Letterfrack and Connemara Spinning.
The Bogman Shield on Saturday will cater for A4 riders – the route will be the same as Stage 1 of the main race but for two laps. Shield presentation will be held in the Marian Hall, Tullycross, directly after race.
