With another school year completed, it’s time for kids around the country to enjoy their time off; be that on vacation, at summer camps, or simply by getting outdoors. To ensure they can make the best of it, here are some summer time tips!

Sun Safety: Even on cloudy days, UVA rays with their longer wavelength can pass through the clouds and cause sun damage. It’s important to always wear sun protection during the summer months, and for when kids will be outside for a long period of time, it’s vital to apply a high enough SPF to avoid having to reapply as often. The Green People Organic Kids Sun Lotion SPF 30 has an incredibly gentle and fragrance free formula, and Alba Botanica Kids Sunscreen Spray SPF 50 is easy to apply as it sprays from any angle – if kids would prefer to apply it themselves, supervise to ensure they are being thorough! Reapplication of sun protection is necessary, and it can also help to dress appropriately, with wide brimmed sun hats, sunglasses which provide UVA and UVB protection, and for those who may be less likely to reapply, there is also clothing with SPF built in available.

There are now lots of alternative insect repellents which are DEET free, and suitable for various ages and skin types. Incognito Insect Repellent Spray is very popular, as is the Tail Swat from MooGoo, which rather than a repellent, is simply a natural scented body spray that insects hate (and can therefore be used liberally). For environmental use, citronella oil can be diffused, or citronella incense burned – perfect for evening barbeques to deter any insects! If there has been an insect bite, lavender essential oil is perfect to apply to the skin – you can dilute this in a little carrier oil and it will ease the itch and discomfort.
