15_CandelaValerie Osborne, of Moycullen’s Elysium Day Spa, looks at the difference between laser and IPL hair removal

There is often some confusion amongst clients when it comes to understanding the difference between IPL and Laser Hair Removal. Both treatments produce energy in order to disrupt the growth cycle of each hair follicle to reduce hair growth without damaging the surrounding tissue.

The main differences between Laser and IPL hair removal lie in the technology that each use to generate the light. Elysium uses laser technology for hair removal rather than IPL based technology, and the main reasons for this are:

• Laser technology is simply much more effective, and achieves substantially better results than IPL – 90% of clients have permanent hair loss after 3-5 sessions.

• Lasers are far more precise, and can selectively target dark, coarse hairs while leaving the surrounding skin undamaged.

• Each laser pulse takes a fraction of a second and can treat several hairs at a time making it far more efficient.

Laser: Laser machines produce a single wavelength of light (pure light consisting of one single colour and form), which has a very concentrated beam and specific target (the melanin in hair follicle). The type/colour of your hair and skin will determine the tuning settings of the machine and will be discussed with you during your patch test and consultation.

Laser machines are tuned to emit the exact wavelength required to treat your hair. The heat is absorbed by the follicle and not the skin, therefore there is a decreased risk of burning when using laser.

Elysium uses the Candela GentleLASE Alexandrite laser machine for hair removal. Alexandrite lasers have been shown in numerous clinical trials to be the most effective lasers for hair removal. The Candela Alexandrite laser is a medical grade laser with the gold standard in the laser hair removal industry. These are very effective lasers and they deeply penetrate the dermal layers and destroy the root of the hair, resulting in permanent hair reduction.

IPL: When it comes to hair removal using IPL, it will probably take longer to achieve the same results and the treatment takes longer to preform than laser, which is why most clinics have upgraded their systems. However, IPL plays an important role in the treatment of the skin, such as treating superficial pigmentation and facial thread veins and burst blood vessels.

IPL Photorejuvenation is a non-invasive treatment that provides an effective way to correct and treat skin damage without disruption of the skin’s surface, producing younger and healthier looking skin on the face, neck, chest and hands.

Elysium now offers two different laser and light systems

• The new Candela GentleLASE: long pulsed Alexandrite laser with skin cooling spray system – treating facial and body hair removal

• Ellipse intense pulsed light (IPL) – treating facial thread veins and facial photo-rejuvenation: (pigmentation, scarring, anti-ageing)

NB: A consultation and patch test is required before any laser treatment to ensure you are a suitable candidate.

This also allows you feel how comfortable the treatment is.

After the consultation you will have a clear understanding of how the laser works and what is required from you and your therapist for a successful course of treatments. Call 091 556846 or go to for more information and videos.
